6 Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding

by Isis Nouvelle

There’s no doubt about it, weddings can be expensive; the average cost of a wedding today is 20 to 25 thousand dollars with an industry estimated at 25.3 billion dollars per year. Just because a wedding is expensive does not mean it will be a success; although you may not believe it now, a cheap wedding can be arranged which everyone will enjoy. Here are a few suggestions to help you save some money on the more expensive areas; perhaps using the savings on something more worthwhile.

1. Hand Designed Brides Dress - A hand made wedding dress which is the norm these days comes at a cost; other options are available, including buying a previously owned dress. Selling previously owned wedding dresses is an area which is becoming more popular; when a bride-to-be realizes she can have a quality handmade dress for half the cost of a new one or even renting it for the day, this begins to make sense.

2. The Wedding Reception - The biggest savings can be made with the reception; the average number of guests is just under 190 but this is an area where costs can be reduced as soon as you start to plan your cheap wedding. Reducing the number of people who attend, including distant relatives or friends you haven’t been in contact with for years, will help enormously; you can even carry out some of the catering yourself and have a hot and cold buffet style meal instead of a four courses.

The venue of the wedding reception can also be somewhere less expensive than the local golf club or hotel; using a small club for example will mean the drinks bill is less by only catering for wine, beer and soft drinks at the bar.

3. The Wedding Photographs - As far as the photographer is concerned, why not just hire one for the service; most guests take cameras and will be happy to take photos at the reception and of course you will have plenty to choose from. If you really want to be ‘avant guard’, why pay for a photographer at all; these days most people know someone who is a keen, capable amateur photographer, and there is nothing wrong with asking them to take photos throughout the whole day.

4. Home Made Personalized Invitations - Cutting down on costs can also mean creating your own wedding invitations and seating cards etc; a personal computer combined with a home printer means it is quite easy to produce very professional looking results. The quality of printers available combined with sophisticated programs means it is quite easy to do; in fact very professional looking results can be achieved on a home computer.

5. Flower Bouquets - There are also savings to be made with the flower displays; there is no reason why the flowers cannot be purchased from a wholesaler just as florists do. If possible, try and get a friend to make your wedding cake for you; cakes do not have to be the traditional fruit so try a sponge cake with a chocolate flavor filling for example

6. Wedding Transportation - Savings can also be made by not hiring that expensive limousine and using a friend’s vehicle; given a good clean and polish it can make an acceptable substitute.

Remember, a cheap wedding does not necessarily mean a bad wedding; just think of how much you will have saved to start your new life together!
